DADS are based in the West Norfolk town of Downham Market. We have been running since 1947 offering quality, amateur entertainment for local residents. Normally we offer 3 productions a year ranging from family pantomimes to serious drama. We have around 20 - 30 active adult members with 20 - 25 more receiving our newsletter as friends of the society.
As well as putting on our own productions we also participate various events around the town including the Downham Festival where we have put on an evening of entertainment, to the Downham Carnival, where we decorate a float to proceed through the town centre and then provide entertainment at the fair afterwards. We have also been lucky enough to win 'Best Float' a number of times over the years!
We are always glad to hear from any new members that would like to help with our productions, whether this is on stage, or even if you don't want to tread the boards, then we always welcome backstage and front of house help. Feel free to get in contact with us here or just come along to a rehearsal night or reading. Our meeting nights are generally Mondays and Fridays from 7.30pm - 10pm when rehearsals are on.
We are mainly based at The Jubilee Community Centre, Howdale Road, Downham Market, PE38 9AH.
We have been active participants of the NODA approved Hunstanton and District Festival of Arts for the past 11 years, each time putting in an original play written by one of our members. Over the years our entries have been quite successful at the Festival, receiving numerous awards for 'Best Original Script', 'Best Actresses' and winning the much coveted prize of 'Best Play' 3 times. We have also been nominated for various other awards throughout the years.
We also run a youth drama group called KIDDS (Kids in Downham Drama Society), it has been running for around 7 years offering drama tuition for 8 - 16 year olds in the local area. The children have the opportunity to participate in the winter pantomime and some musicals with the adult society but also put on their own independent shows each year. The group has a good participation of around 10 - 15 young people.
